So, a little more about me and my motherhood journey. Although, completely unconventional in every way it is completely perfect for me. We didn't follow the usual order of marriage, house then children. Matt and I fell in love quickly, a whirlwind romance that still has us both completely hook, line and sinker! We met just before Covid and moved in with each other just as the world locked down, it was make or break! We were "all in"...Matt already had a little girl, Lily who stole my heart instantly. And so, we spent the summer being the three musketeers, going for long walks, building a tree house and creating memories.

I came into Lily's life when she was 6, she was navigating her own challenges but was a strong, determined little girl who welcomed me so warmly. Lily is now 10, she lives with us and was my first lesson in motherhood. I had to learn quick and ensure i was the kind of role model she needed and wanted in life. I haven't always got it right, we have had to learn to understand each other and grow together. I'm also not too proud to learn from Lily, as a child i used to hate the phrase "because i said so" or "because i'm the adult" so i really wanted to ensure i did everything i could to create an environment where we can openly communicate, explain and make meaningful decisions together... besides 10 year olds are always right anyway aren't they?!

After a couple of years living together, Matt and I decided to add to our family. We needed a little help so started the IVF process and were incredibly lucky to get pregnant. 9 months later and we welcomed our wonderful baby boy, Toby. He has already brought us all so much joy in such a small amount of time. I am so excited to see who he becomes, but equally want time to slow down already!
Like most Mums i have learnt to dodge the surprise wee in between nappy changes, caught a poop in my bare hands and have milk dribble on almost every outfit within 5mins of wearing it. I regularly pretend i haven't noticed the eye rolls of a pre-teen, or the mascara she is not meant to be wearing to school. I give cuddles to a baby with tummy ache and cuddles to a 10 year old after a fall out with a friend. I often finish my day looking bedraggled but with a smile as i go to bed, knowing i did my best for both of them, even if it wasn't always conventional it was always my best. Through all of it i have been learning at a pace i never knew existed, i constantly find more capacity to grow and love. I have found that instinct has taken over far more times than anything i have read in a book, and being a parent brings a level of intuition and self awareness into life that was never there before. As with everything i make the odd mistake, but hope that in sharing some of my ups, downs and inbetweens it may be of use to someone.... and if not maybe it will provide a little laugh here and there instead.
